Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School 5 must have rules
The Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School are dedicated to ensuring their physical education program is fun and challenging while allowing students to gain skills from a wide variety of sports in a safe environment.
One of the challenges faced by schools is that kids are at different levels in terms of fitness, skills and aptitude. While many children are involved in team or representative sports outside of school - there are also many that are not.
Kids that are involved in sport outside of school may have a greater capacity to understand rules and the specific skills associated with sport.
However for those kids not involved in a club or representative sport it is often difficult for them to keep up when it is time to play sport at school. It may make it hard for them to enjoy sport or learn about the importance of participating in a team. They may not understand the rules and make mistakes or become confused about what they need to be doing to ensure their active participation.
To overcome this challenge, the Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School have introduced a physical education program that helps simplify the rules of each of the sports in their curriculum.
The '5 must have' rules program' are simplified versions of the actual rules for different sports. For each sport there are just five basic rules to understand whether its netball, football, hockey, volley ball or short tennis.
The successful program has enabled students to focus on developing particular skills associated with a sport rather than worrying about a lack of understanding of the rules. This allows sport at the school to include games where there is mix ability, self-umpiring and a focus on team work.
