BENEFIT AMENDMENTS
The NSW Minister for Finance has announced important changes to the benefits provided under the Sporting Injuries Insurance Scheme (provides cover for sporting organisations) and the Supplementary Sporting Injuries Benefits Scheme (free cover for all schoolchildren).
Under the updated Sporting Injuries Insurance Regulation 2009, both Insurance Schemes now provide greater access to benefits for permanent loss of use for limbs and hearing and increases the benefit for the reimbursement of funeral expenses. The changes are as follows:
- A reduction in the level of permanent loss required to be suffered by sporting participants to be eligible for a benefit for loss of use of an arm or leg from 33% to 30%, and for permanent loss of hearing in both ears, from 11% to 10%.
- Increased benefits for the reimbursement of funeral expenses, from $4,650 to $9,000.
Importantly the above changes to benefits under both Insurance Schemes are provided at no additional cost to the NSW sporting community. The updated cover becomes effective on 1 September 2009.
