Basketball NSW
Sports Safety Campaign

Basketball NSW collaborated with Youthsafe to review injury records and injury recording processes to identify common injuries in the sport, and, to provide a focus for the development of injury prevention and risk management strategies.

This safety awareness campaign is the end of result of this research and involves the implementation of the recommendations made by Youthsafe as part of the project. Research conducted by Youthsafe identified inconsistencies in injury reporting and highlighted that soft tissue injuries and head injuries should be focus areas for Basketball NSW.

The awareness campaign had three key elements, which included:

  • Improvements to injury reporting systems and the development of a new reporting form to ensure state-wide consistency.
  • The development and distribution of guidance material through a series of factsheets specific to the safe management of soft tissue and head injuries.

A RICER and no harm fact sheet were developed for soft tissue injuries for bruises and bumps, ligament sprains and strains and muscle bruising that clearly outlined the steps of Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and Referral.

The fact sheet 'What to do after a hit to the head' focused on what to do if concussion is suspected in a player, how to identify concussion and the steps that should be taken before returning to play after this type of injury.

The new injury reporting form and guidance material developed as part of this awareness program has been distributed to 100 associations - reaching more than 45 thousand members in NSW.
